I used a 1-min chart with VIX and XIV on my screen. I knew the VIX is ripe for a pullback(daily chart) and still is, so the risk is not so bad. First sign of weakness on the VIX 1-min I entered XIV, sold when the VIX became oversold....nothing fancy or complicated, it moves darn fast thats for sure.

The relationship between the VIX and XIV is pretty weak - look at yestersay's ~12-13% drop in VIX and the tepid move in XIV. Same thing today. Marginal VIX movement up (about 2.5% at the time of this writing) versus the -3.5% drop in XIV.

Not a good proxy for the VIX - seems to be designed to take money, not give it.

More of a cautionary tale - I bought a few hundred shares of XIV right at the close on Monday for 26.61, and despite the big drop in the VIX yesterday the stock barely moved. Really frustrating.

You would be crazy not to snag DGAZ 5-7 bucks in 4-6 months.
